Read Jeremiah 10:8-10
“They are all senseless and foolish;
they are taught by worthless wooden idols.
9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish
and gold from Uphaz.
What the craftsman and goldsmith have made
is then dressed in blue and purple –
all made by skilled workers.
10 But the Lord is the true God;
he is the living God, the eternal King.
When he is angry, the earth trembles;
the nations cannot endure his wrath.” (NIVUK)
The idol mocking argument wrapped in a psalm continues.
Idols and those who follow them are senseless and dead (v8) in contrast to the living God (v10). Idols and those who follow them are foolish and deceived (v8) compared with the true God (v10). Idols decay and break down and need to be dressed up again (v9) unlike the Eternal king who lives forever (v10).
There is sense within the passage that God’s anger is justly provoked by those who offer worship and weightiness to that which is man-made and worthless. Lives wasted pursuing vanity. Meaning is only truly found in one place yet we seek it almost anywhere else.
