Friday 20th June
Read Luke 9:43b-45
“While everyone was marvelling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 ‘Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.’ 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.” (NIVUK)
How much effort do you put into truly grasping the words of Jesus and what they mean to follow Him?
It is understandable that the disciples did not understand at this stage, for three reasons. First, without the cross and resurrection to guide them their preconceptions of who Jesus is and what He would and should do would blind them. Second, there is a hint that they could not have understood even if they wanted to because ‘it was hidden from them’, either by spiritual forces or God Himself. Third, their pride, their fear of looking stupid, prevented them from simply asking!
Do we have any of those excuses ourselves, this side of the cross and resurrection? How hard do we work to grasp who Jesus is and what He would have us do?
