Sunday 8th June
Read Luke 9:20
“‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’
Peter answered, ‘God’s Messiah.’” (NIVUK)
What would your answer be?
Do you think it should be the same answer as Peter provided on behalf of his closest friends and disciples?
I suspect it should be.
CS Lewis popularised one of the more famous arguments for Jesus’ divinity when describing the so-called ‘trilemma’. That famous trilemma being that Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic, or Lord. Peter’s answer suggests that the other options some have proposed, namely prophet or guru, are not in the frame for those who knew Him best.
Our answer should reflect Peter’s. Jesus is Lord, the anointed One of God, sent to save His people. Peter at that time would have limited that salvation to Israel and the Jews. We know now that that salvation knows no limits and reaches to the end of the earth.
The answer remains the same though. When asked who we say Jesus is, we answer with Peter: Jesus is Lord.
