Read 1 Thessalonians 3:9-10
“How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? 10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.” (NIVUK)
What is lacking in their faith? Surely the source of rejoicing for Paul is enough? They have faith in God and stand firm amidst trouble. Paul disagrees. His time with them was cut short. They know of God’s goodness and grace but there is more that they need. They need to know how to walk the path of life and faith. They need to know how to ‘church’ together and what that looks like in practice. A topic he will begin to take up at the end of the letter.
David’s psalm, which we considered yesterday, finishes with just such thoughts. David’s security is assured because he knows God. He is comforted by God’s constant presence beside him. But David still needs instruction in the path of life, how to walk with God amongst the living. Where do you seek such instruction?
“I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
8 I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
With him at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” (Psalm 16:7-11) (NIVUK)
