Wednesday 25th December
Read Luke 1:53-55
“He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants for ever,
just as he promised our ancestors.’” (NIVUK)
Throughout scripture we are exhorted to constantly remember the good things that the Lord has done. Constantly giving thanks. In one famous passage Moses encourages the Israelites to string themselves with tassels, like a Christmas tree, so that they remember! The command to remember exists because we are so prone to forgetting.
In one sense Mary’s song is one of remembrance. She is recounting the amazing things the Lord has done and looking forward to their final fulfilment – it is the very essence of expectant longing. Yet if you look closely, according to Mary, our remembering is based upon God remembering first (v54)!
What can you give thanks for this Christmas day?
