“Pray also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.” (Ephesians 6:19-20)
It doesn’t occur often that Paul asks for prayer for himself but as we go beyond the first phrase it is clear this is really about others. It’s a prayer that he will proclaim the gospel boldly whatever situation he finds himself in, why, so that people might hear and believe. Paul’s prayer is notable in that, if it were me, I might have been a little more focused on the chains around my ankles, asking for my safety and release. How often is the focus of our prayer seeking “better conditions” for ourselves rather than bringing the good news to others? Nothing wrong with asking others to pray for us but this prayer reminds me that Paul’s self-giving love always directs his prayer life toward others.
