Read John 8:23-26
“But he continued, ‘You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.’
25 ‘Who are you?’ they asked.
‘Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,’ Jesus replied. 26 ‘I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.’” (NIVUK)
Almost every time the Scripture speaks of sin there are echoes back to the garden. ‘If you eat of the tree you will surely die’ (Genesis 2:17). Yet Adam and Eve are deceived and fail to trust the word of God. The one who ‘is trustworthy’ though still speaks in the world and the opportunity to trust in Him remains open. He has been and continues to speak ‘from the beginning’. But for those who fail to recognise God’s voice in the person of Jesus all they will hear is judgement. Just as Adam and Eve did after failing to trust God in the garden. What looks like a series of random statements all point back to who Jesus is. He is the one from above. He is the one who brings spirit and life to a dead, dark and deaf world. Will we trust Him?
