Read John 7:1-5
“After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. 2 But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, 3 Jesus’ brothers said to him, ‘Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.’ 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.” (NIVUK)
Who do you take life advice from? There is a sense in which that decision is rather important for the direction one moves in and the values one espouses. Take advice from the wrong people, with questionable motives, and the result could be disastrous. Often we consult family when big decisions need to be made. Certainly family thinks they know what is best for you quite frequently!
Recognising that Jesus’ following is waning his brothers tell Him to head up to Judea and perform miracles there, restart the show so to speak. It is actually quite logical advice considering that Jesus has lost disciples who have found His teaching too hard. The miracles He performs though are quite persuasive – perhaps He can rebuild His following from the signs He can perform? Maybe Jesus should play to His strengths? But if their values don’t align with God’s values…
