Read John 8:52-53
“At this they exclaimed, ‘Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?’” (NIVUK)
The offer of life is put forward (v51) and is categorically rejected. The very idea that Jesus’ words provide life that Abraham’s and the prophets’ could not is preposterous. They literally respond with the very question Jesus is seeking them to answer – who do they think He is?
I wonder how often our words prompt people to ask that very question?
