Read John 1:6-8
“There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.” (NIVUK)
The reason John was sent to witness to Jesus as the light was so that ‘all might believe’. It is not a straightforward matter to just decide you are going to ‘believe’ in Jesus. God sent John to prepare the way, to witness to the light and help people prepare.
Although he dressed strangely, all John had was words. Words that challenged people to think about their lives seriously. Words that declared that Jesus was the One they had been waiting for, even longing for. Just words. But those words were true. There is amazing power in truly spoken words.
“Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.” 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.” (John 10:40-42) (NIVUK)
