Monday 29th July
Read John 12:1-3
“Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honour. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about half a litre of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” (NIVUK)
How do you honour those whom you love? Is it through words of affirmation, public declarations about their goodness? Do you do things for them that indicates how high they are held in your esteem? Often those acts would be considered simple, humbling, deeds of service, but indicate as clearly as possible how great your love for them is.
There is much that is signified in Mary’s act for Jesus and we will consider that significance in more detail through the week. But first and foremost, we should note that it is an act of love. It marks out how much she honours Jesus. How much He means to her. It is an exemplar of humility, love and service.
We may think that we would do likewise if given the opportunity but I fear we would not. Consider that in the very next chapter Jesus has to teach His disciples to wash each other’s feet, and do it Himself (John 13). Mary, unbidden washes Jesus’ feet, at immense expense, drying them with her own hair.
How do you honour those whom you love most?
