Read John 1:9-13
“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (NIVUK)
How many lights can you think of? How many things or people claim to be able to reveal things as they really are, provide insight by which life can and should be lived, a universal skeleton key to life? If one pauses to ponder this question there are actually many such claims.
John will have none of it. The ‘true’ light, the genuine and unique light, arrived with Jesus. This doesn’t mean that the Law originally provided at Sinai was not ‘true’. It was merely dimmer. Consider it like the light of the moon versus that of the sun. Both are true, but the moon is simply a reflection of the sun.
Although one can find evidence that the Law provided at Sinai was intended for everyone – in practice that was never the case. The true light, Jesus, always intended to shine for all.
