“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.” (Psalm 139:6) (NIVUK)
As David reflects on his thoughts of God’s extraordinary knowledge of, and love for him, he struggles to find suitable words to express it. It is too big, too wonderful, too high, for him to understand.
Spurgeon puts it like this:
“I cannot grasp it. I can hardly endure to think of it. The theme overwhelms me. I am amazed and astounded at it. Such knowledge not only surpasses my comprehension, but even my imagination”.
Awe and wonder should be at the very heart of our faith. Without being able to be astonished and amazed by the majesty of our God, our faith becomes narrow and theoretical, rather than being vibrant and living.
Awe puts everything in perspective, pushes us to delve deeper, and gives us courage to step forward in faith along whatever path God has set out for us.
Awe fills our hearts with delight and joy!
“The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.” Ps 65:8 (NIVUK)
