Read 2 Timothy 2:7-10
“Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.” (NIVUK)
Paul was trying to tell Timothy through the picture of the soldier, athlete and farmer that there is no gain to be had without struggle and suffering. Just like Jesus (v8) and Paul (v9). We should expect no less.
Notice Paul’s words though. ‘Remember Jesus Christ’ (v8). How is that possible? Yet all too often and all too easily we forget. We are distracted by other worthy things and forget Jesus Himself. It is Jesus that is at the heart of the gospel.
Paul’s summary is short but rich. Remember Jesus, raised from the dead, descended from David. In two short phrases Paul captures His life, purpose, ministry death and resurrection. He captures His divinity and eternity and His humanity. It is rich and powerful.
It is worth remembering. It is worth reflecting on. How often do you forget Jesus?
