Read 2 Timothy 4:6-8
“For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” (NIVUK)
The final reason Timothy has to preach the word is because Paul is about to die. Paul is an old man very near the end. He is about to be sacrificed and depart, like a boat unmooring, for better places.
For that simple reason the baton must be passed on. Who first told you the gospel and introduced you to Jesus? Are they still around? Have you stepped up to lead others to Jesus in their stead yet? For one day we all must do so.
If you have already stepped up I guess there is a more important question to ask. Do you look forward to Jesus’ return? Do you long for it? Can you explain to others why you do (if you do)?
There are many questions to ask as we ponder this poignant passage…
