Read Matthew 6:19-21
“‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (NIVUK)
Tim Keller regularly asked those who attended his church what they valued most in life. Was there anything which, if taken away, would devastate them. He often provided options. If you lost your job, were demoted or even simply told that what you contributed was simply not good enough. If your investments collapsed and you were penniless. If your children didn’t get into the university you and they had set their hearts on, or your spouse suddenly leaves you. The list was endlessly challenging. The point was always the same. If the loss of anything grieved you to the point of depression it revealed itself as the most valuable thing in your life. The thing you ‘set your heart on’. If that thing was not God Himself, it was an idol. That is practically what Jesus is saying here, ‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also’.
