Living according to the Proverbs
What is Wisdom?
“For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding”
(Proverbs 2:6) (NIVUK)
In many ways wisdom is hard to define, but it is something that we recognise when we see it.
Wisdom is not based on IQ or academic learning, but it does require knowledge and understanding. It is not legalistic or narrow-minded, nor is it indecisive or reactionary. Wisdom is not prejudiced or self-motivated but puts truth before personal gain.
True wisdom involves:
Discernment:
“Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning” (Proverbs 10:13) (NIVUK)
Understanding:
“Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding” (Proverbs 3:13) (NIVUK)
Knowledge:
“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out” (Proverbs 18:15) (NIVUK)
Sound judgement and discretion:
“Do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion” (Proverbs 3:21) (NIVUK)
Making right decisions:
“For doing what is right, and just, and fair” (Proverbs 1:3) (NIVUK)
Insight:
“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out” (Proverbs 20:5) (NIVUK)
