Read 2 Timothy 4:1-2
“In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction.” (NIVUK)
These are likely the last words Paul wrote. The solemnity and seriousness with which he writes is incredibly poignant. A formal charge, a command even, to preach the word. Delivered with the most powerful witness imaginable, the returning judge of all the earth!
Imagine receiving this yourself.
In one sense this is an awesome passing of the gospel baton from Paul to Timothy. In another it is a charge that could equally be passed on to us. We have received the same gospel Paul delivered to Timothy. We too are always ‘on duty’, whether we are prepared to share that good news or simply too tired.
For those led astray by false teaching we are to patiently correct. For those still caught in sin we are to gently rebuke. For those weighed down by life we are to carefully encourage. All of us are called to this teaching ministry. If the task seems too large, we are to share the burden with others.
I suspect that each of leans towards one of those three verbs more than the others. Some instinctively know the truth and can’t help but correct others. Some see moral failings and weaknesses everywhere and are so grieved they rebuke those thus engaged. Some are born encouragers who will always be able to provide the good word to lift people’s spirits. Yet Paul charges Timothy to do all three. Which do you need to work harder on yourself with the help and grace of God?
