Tuesday 17th September
Read Matthew 7:7-8
“‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (NIVUK)
Jesus’ instructions in these words are all in the present tense. Asking, seeking and knocking is something we are to do continually. There is a requirement to persist in prayer. Many of the parables Jesus told point to the requirement for persistence, even when it seems foolish, even when it is inopportune. Prayer is not to be an isolated series of one-off requests, easily forgotten amidst the bustle of daily life. Prayer is to be a persistent, disciplined act. The symmetry in Jesus’ words emphasises this. Asking results in receiving, seeking finding and knocking opens doors.
Is your prayer life characterised by persistence?
