“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 15:5-6)
What hits me between the eyes in this prayer is the characteristics of God that Paul highlights at the beginning; do I give thanks for God’s endurance and encouragement, maybe the second but not often endurance? Paul links the character of God to the need of the people he is praying for; endurance to bring harmony? Possibly there is a lesson to be learnt about praying for our sisters and brothers in Christ. The last sentence is a prayer that I need personally but it is also one that I figure I should pray daily for the local and universal church.
