Saturday 18th November
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Saviour.” (1 Timothy 2:1-3)
As Paul writes to this young pastor there are some instructions about his prayer life that we can apply to our daily prayer list. It is clear that Paul sees prayer as an important part of being salt in the Ephesian community and Timothy’s care for the church includes his prayer for the community leaders; in our context prayer for governments at all levels and also for those responsible for care and protection and justice within our city. I always find Paul’s explanation of what the desired outcome of these prayers is – ‘a peaceful and quiet life, in all godliness and holiness” reassuring. How often do we prayer in this way, not for a change in government and leadership as much as wise decision making that will bring peace and opportunity to live as God intended? Ultimately such an outcome is pleasing to Jesus, we should listen carefully to Paul’s advice.
