Read John 1:6-8
“There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.” (NIVUK)
We fall from the lofty heights of pre-incarnate time and creation renewed (John 1:1-5) to the seemingly prosaic witness of John. From the Word of God to the word of one man. Many have therefore thought that someone has misplaced these verses. Why, after such lofty heights, do we fall so quickly to a simple witness?
There is almost a sense in which, were it not for John, we might miss Jesus! We are so blind to God and His majesty that unless God sends a prophet to declare that He has come, to prepare His way, we would walk by Him in ignorance (…the darkness has not understood it) (v5b). What kind of majesty requires this kind of witness?
Majesty matched with meekness.
