Read Matthew 5:7
“Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.” (NIVUK)
Don Carson helpfully suggests that whilst grace answers to the undeserving, mercy answers to the miserable. It is so easy to overlook, or even steer away from, those who are miserable and wretched.
Jesus argues that the good life is found in those who see people who are hurting and in need because only those people truly understand the depths of the mercy they have received themselves.
This is not a transactional truth, as if in some way we only receive mercy if we are merciful ourselves. This reflects the character, transformed and renewed, of those in the kingdom who know they have received mercy and pass it on.
His mercy is more indeed.
