“Let the wise listen and add to their learning” (Proverbs 1:5)
Listen to the Lord:
Listen to the Lord, for “from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6) (NIVUK)
We’ve recently thought about this aspect of being missional in our reflections from Surprise the World. It’s about the importance of creating quiet spaces in our lives where God can speak to us, teach us his wisdom, and give us clarity in the way we should go.
Listen to others:
This is not just listening to anyone who offers advice, but listening to those in whom we see God’s wisdom and discernment – to those whose motives are God-directed rather than based on self-interest.
“Without counsel, plans go awry,
But in the multitude of counsellors they are established.” (Proverbs 15:22) (NKJV)
“Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice” (Proverbs 27:9) (NIVUK)
“A fool thinks he needs no advice, but a wise man listens to others” (Proverbs 12:15) (TLB)
So, take time to stop and listen, both to the Lord and to godly counsel. Think deeply about what you hear and consider how these truths and insights can add wisdom to your day-to-day living.
