Friday 8th December
Read John 1:1-5
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (NIVUK)
We are slowly, like a rising dawn, beginning to see the wonder of how creation was animated. It flowed from within the Word. It was inherent to His very being. It suffuses everything because it suffused Him. ‘In him was life’ indeed!
The first ‘word’ spoken was ‘Let light be’ (Genesis 1:3)! That Word flows out into creation, overcoming the darkness and bringing life. Though John (and Jesus) will later use the images of ‘life’ and ‘light’ in salvific, redemptive ways, here, at the beginning – they are linked to creation and form the very foundation of the redemption that we now enjoy. We are saved because of who God is in His very being. To cut oneself off from the very source of life is to live in darkness and death.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17) (NIV)
