Read 1 Thessalonians 2:17-20
“But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you. 18 For we wanted to come to you – certainly I, Paul, did, again and again – but Satan blocked our way. 19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy.” (NIVUK)
If one ponders why Jesus came to earth there is only one conclusion. He came for us. There is nothing that He needed. He is the author of creation and self-sufficient in every way. But His joy was secured in winning a people who choose to lay down their crowns at His feet and delight in His presence.
It should come as no surprise then that Paul, who modeled himself on the Lord Jesus in every way, can declare that his hope, joy and crown would be the Thessalonians themselves. He shares his master’s desires in every way. The angels in heaven rejoice when one sinner repents. Paul rejoices in the faith of the Thessalonians, in the faith of everyone who welcomes Jesus as Lord.
Is our joy and delight located in the right place?
