Read 1 Thessalonians 5:14
“And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” (NIVUK)
Think through how one holds all of these injunctions together. How do you warn those who choose not to work and disrupt the good work of others whilst being patient with everyone? How do you encourage those who are disheartened if they express that through idleness and lashing out at others, because they are spiritually weak? The challenge is significant and perhaps the leaders in Thessalonica didn’t quite get the balance right (v12-13).
Wisdom is necessary to hold all these injunctions together. Both firmness when needed and grace when required. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5) (NIVUK). The expression of this God-given wisdom in the lives of those who follow Jesus is a key task for those who strive to prepare themselves for Jesus’ return. It is hard work.
