Friday 27th June
Read Luke 9:57-58
“As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’
58 Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’” (NIVUK)
Fifth lesson: Comfort is not guaranteed when following Jesus.
I suspect the fourth lesson is that following Jesus requires a willingness to be wronged. The fifth lesson develops the consequences. It is likely not a coincidence that immediately after the encounter with the Samaritan village, where the disciples and Jesus found no place to lay their heads, that Luke records Jesus’ observation about those willing to follow Jesus wholeheartedly.
Following Jesus doesn’t mean we live as the homeless, but that sometimes we might have to. There are choices that must be made, where the path divides, and the easy path may not be the one Jesus calls us down.
