“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10) (NIVUK)
To gain wisdom we must fear God.
Fearing God is about being awestruck – being rendered speechless by the incomparableness of who he is. He is infinite, all-powerful, all-knowing, and present everywhere. He is Holy and Just, and the Righteous Judge of all the world.
J.I. Packer writes:
‘Not until we become humble and teachable, standing in awe of God’s holiness and sovereignty, acknowledging our own littleness, distrusting our own thoughts, and willing to have our minds turned upside down, can divine wisdom become ours’ (Knowing God p.90)
” If you look for it (Wisdom) as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:4-6) (NIVUK)
