Friday 13th June
Read Luke 9:28-33
“About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendour, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfilment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, ‘Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ (He did not know what he was saying.)” (NIVUK)
Why Moses and Elijah? The traditional view is that they represent the law and the prophets witnessing to Jesus as the fulfilment of all that was written and expected. They certainly fulfil that brief perfectly.
Yet one can’t help but wonder if part of the reason they are present relates to their prior witness of the glory of God. Moses and Elijah both saw God’s glory on Sinai, if not God’s face. On this mountain they saw God’s glory and His face. The disciples themselves also received a picture of when things are completed. They experienced what we all long for.
“Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:8-13) (NIVUK)
