Tuesday 5th March
Read Matthew 5:17-18
“‘Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” (NIVUK)
In case people were thinking that Jesus was over-riding the law, or disregarding it, or even breaking it, He makes it very clear that He will fulfil and accomplish it. But having fulfilled it, it is not thereby abandoned or superseded. It remains eternally, or at least until ‘heaven and earth disappear’, which for all intents and purposes is eternally, until the universe ends.
How often do you spend time in the law and the prophets? How often do you meditate upon them? Jesus considers the smallest, most insignificant mark on a page to be of eternal and lasting significance. Do you share His view? If you don’t it is worth asking the question – why not?
