Read John 1:9-13
“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (NIVUK)
We step into the heart of one of the world’s mysteries. The One who created the world, enters the world, but remains unknown. How is that possible? As the One who created it there is simply no way He could be a stranger. The conclusion can only be that those in His world are estranged from Him. There is a relational blindness at the heart of the world. The light comes to everyone but the blindness is real.
There is also hope hidden in this desperate observation. For He does come into the world, a world estranged from Him. He doesn’t come to wander around as a stranger and simply leave. He comes to reveal, to bring understanding.
Consider Isaiah’s description of the suffering servant… when He comes.
“For what they were not told, they will see,
and what they have not heard, they will understand.” (Isaiah 52:15b) (NIVUK)
Estrangement reversed – and the first move was His.
