“For wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her” (Proverbs 8:11) (NIVUK)
We desire and strive for a lot of things in life – good health, financial security, love, a family, a rewarding and enjoyable career, and so on. The lack of these things may bring us heartache and may even cause us to doubt God’s love for us. But wisdom is not just ‘better than’ these things, it is not even comparable! It is the greatest earthly treasure we can desire and incalculable in value.
Solomon knew this and cried out to his Lord for wisdom when faced with the overwhelming challenge of leading God’s chosen people. Because of his heart-felt plea for wisdom, God’s people through the centuries have been blessed and challenged by his insightful words.
“‘So, give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?’
10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, ‘Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies, but for discernment in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.'” (1 Kings 3:9-12) (NIVUK)
“The beginning of wisdom is this: get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding”
(Proverbs 4:7) (NIVUK)
