Read 2 Timothy 3:6-7
“They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (NIVUK)
Ancient doorknockers! Preying upon those who stay at home whilst their husbands are breadwinning. Easily persuaded because they have too much time on their hands but lack wisdom. When we read these words it is easy to be distracted and annoyed by the seemingly misogynist caricature of women.
Yet caricatures only exist because there is at least a modicum of truth to them. Paul is not saying all women are like this. He knows and works with many godly women who he praises and encourages others to learn from. So there is a pathos to this image that is truly sad. People being preyed upon but never reaching true knowledge – constantly darkened and deceived.
“‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16) (NIVUK)
