Give thanks to God for the abundance of blessings in your life right now. Ephesians 1:3
The phrase “Count your blessings” is thought to date from the 19th century. At least that’s the earliest direct attribution I could find. The sentiment is, of course, much older. Ancient even. If taken with a spirit of gratitude, it’s a great way to focus your heart and mind on the provision, heart, and mind of God. It is hard to be properly resentful when you tally up all that is good in your life. Even through the darkest days of depression and anxiety there is much that I am thankful for and I quickly lose count – which I find to be a VERY good thing!
Something that comes to mind is the scene from “Life of Brian” where the “crew” ask the question “What have the romans ever done for us?”, and then spend the next several minutes realizing that there are many things to be thankful for, even if they resent the source. For us though, God is not a hostile, invasive, force – out for it’s own gain at all costs, but rather a loving provident seeking our good, at all costs (to Him).
